Design Code Supplementary Planning Document

Overview

Uttlesford District Council is asking for your views on our updated Design Code Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

We are updating our Design Code SPD that describes design principles, requirements and guidance to make development acceptable in planning terms. This SPD is a revision of the previous version adopted in 2024 and has been aligned to the Uttlesford Local Plan 2021-2041.

Background

This Design Code SPD has been based on and informed by the National Model Design Code (NMDC) and the National Design Guide (NDG). The previous version was consulted on in Summer 2023 and formally adopted in Summer 2024. This version of the code has numerous minor revisions and amendments but is materially the same document. If you have made a particular point in the previous consultation, you will not need to make the same point again in this further consultation.

Why your views matter

This consultation seeks comments on updates made since the last version (June 2024). These include:

• Revisions to align with Local Plan policies.
• Revisions to improve clarity or meaning.
• Omission & creation of codes & guidance, primarily where there has been duplication, or where guidance has been strengthened to code or where, in limited instances, new codes have been added where a need has been identified.
• Corrections to minor typos or errors.
